H istory of the Festival

A festival that is both very old and very young

The Luberon International String Quartet Festival was created by Mrs. Benita Carteron and is organized by the Amis de la Musique du Luberon et du Pays d'Aix, A.M.L.P.A., an association created in 1976. It will have its 49th edition in 2024. It is therefore an old festival, deeply rooted and well known in the region. Due to the brilliant reputation of the artists who have succeeded one another over the past 47 years, it also well renowned for its high quality in the musical world.

In the spring of 2011, at a time when it was experiencing difficulties and was on the verge of disappearing, the Festival was taken over by a new team chaired by Mrs. Hélène Caron Salmona, by modernizing and giving a new impetus to its prestige.

Since then, every year, with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic, a dozen concerts are given at the end of August in little churches of the department of Vaucluse and at Silvacane Abbey in the department of Bouches-du-Rhone, with French and foreign quartets.

At the same time, the Festival is engaged in social actions with schools in the two departments of Vaucluse and Bouches du Rhône, and each year commissions a contemporary composition with an artist in residence.

Public authorities are keen to support this Festival which receives financial support from the PACA Regional Council, the General Councils of Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhône, the Communities of Pays d'Aix and Pont Julien, the Town Hall of La Roque d'Anthéron and the Town Hall of Roussillon. It is also recognized and supported by specialized organizations such as SPEDIDAM and Sacem. In 2024, the Festival is also supported by the Singer Polignac Foundation and the Geneva Competition.
